In 2003 Chantilly Tea Room took part in an event across the United States called "Tea Across America." Tea Rooms across the country were invited to participate in sponsoring and hosting a tea party in a nursing home in honor of Shelley A. Marshall. Shelley was a woman who loved the ritual of afternoon tea and the graciousness it embodies and after she died in the attacks on Sept. 11th her husband created the Shelley A. Marshall Foundation that responds to evil with charitable events, like tea parties for the infirmed, that inspire and enrich the human spirit.
In response to this invitation, Chantilly donated a tea party for residents of a care facility, some of which have Alzheimer’s. Even though "Tea Across America" only took place in 2003, we have continued the tradition and 2006 marked our fourth year. Each year, members from our staff donate their time to take china, linens, sugar bowls, teapots, tea sandwiches, scones, and sweets to a local nursing home. Invitations are presented to residents requesting their presence at "Tea at Three." Along with dress-up clothes, the ladies can pick fun costume jewelry to wear during their teatime. All have been touched by this experience.
